The Nigerian Military is made of three distinct forces, and so are most Military Universities in Nigeria (i.e. the Nigerian Air Force, the Nigerian Army, & theĀ  Nigerian NAVY).

1. The Nigerian Defense Academy (NDA) Kaduna

The widely known Nigerian Defense Academy (NDA) is unparalleled and maintains first place on our full list of military universities in Nigeria. It is situated in Kaduna state and is also the first and most coveted and is the most recognized military university in Nigeria.

NDA was created in January 1964 as a replacement for the British-run Royal Military Forces Training College (RMFTC), which had been renamed the Nigerian Military Training College (NMTC) after Nigeria’s independence.

This military university since its inception has successfully trained the officer corps of the wing of the Nigerian Military (Nigerian Army, Air Force, and Navy.)

It didn’t start providing undergraduate programs until 1985 to officers in training, and since then, it now offers M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs even to graduates of civilian universities.

At first, the NDA staff wing and trainers were mostly officers in the Indian Army, with its first commander being an Indian-bearing Brigadier M.R. Varma. But, over the years had grown to an all-Nigerian training staff in 1978, and In 1981, it began bilateral training of foreign militaries.

The Duration of training at the Nigerian Defence Academy is five (5) years, which comprises four (4) years of academic studies and one (1) year of military training.

2. The Nigerian Army University, Biu, Borno State

This university was established in 2018 and as such it is roughly 5 years old making it one of the most recently established military universities in Nigeria.

The university focuses on training Army cadet officers, in core skills they need to be responsive to duties after their graduation and in turn to strengthen the Nigerian Army and the nation through sound and innovative uses of science and technology to fight wars.

According to the NAUB website, the school’s vision is to become a military university with a solution centre in technology, research and development for the promotion of self-reliance, creativity and innovation in addressing the challenges of the Nigerian Army, the military as well and the nation.

This Military university is on a mission of developing and engaging highly skilled military and civilian manpower with distinctive competence, that can handle and provide creative technological solutions and contributions to the challenges of the Nigerian Army, the military and the nation at large.

The university plans to have both civilians and the military as students. According to the university, they plan to have about 75% of their students as civilians while the military takes up the remaining 25%. The staff of the university is also mixed with both civilians and the military.

NAUB has seven faculties, including Science, Social Sciences, Technology, Military Technology, Military Policy, Environmental Studies, Administrative and Management Studies, Logistics and Strategies.
